Skip permits, without the run-around
The short version: you only need a permit if the skip sits on a public road, pavement or verge, and it is the skip company’s job to apply, not yours. We handle the application with your council and add their fee to your booking at cost. On a driveway or private land, no permit exists to worry about.
This trips people up constantly, because half the skip websites out there still say “arrange your permit with the council”. Try it and you will hit a wall: every council we deliver for issues skip permits to registered skip operators only. Cheshire West and Chester’s application page says householder applications will not be accepted at all. So the honest process is simple: tell us the skip is going on the road, we apply, and the council’s fee, the exact figure, no mark-up, goes on your booking.

Flintshire permits are issued to registered skip operators holding £5 million public liability insurance. The operator applies, not the resident.

Wirral adds a £65 charge on top if it finds a skip on the road without a permit, a bill that lands on whoever cut the corner. We do not cut it.

Your own driveway, garden, yard or field: no permit, no fee, book for tomorrow. The same goes for genuinely private roads. The line to watch is the pavement and the grass verge, which count as public highway even outside your own house. If the skip’s footprint touches any of it, it needs the permit. What a road placement involves
A skip on the highway has legal dressing: reflective markings, lights at night, and the operator’s name and phone number on the side. All of that is our responsibility and comes with the skip. Yours is simpler: do not move the skip once it is placed, and do not let it be overfilled past level, because an overloaded skip cannot legally be craned onto the lorry from a live road.

Do I apply for the skip permit or does the skip company?
The skip company. Every council we deliver for, Cheshire West and Chester, Flintshire and Wirral, only accepts permit applications from the skip operator, and Cheshire West says outright that householder applications will not be accepted. When you book with us, we apply and add the council's fee to your booking at cost.
How much does a skip permit cost near Chester?
It depends on the council, not the skip firm: Cheshire West and Chester charges £110 for up to a month, Flintshire £60 for the first week then £25 a week, and Wirral £53.25 for up to 14 days (£35.40 for a mini skip). Figures checked August 2026; the council's own page always has the current rate.
Do I need a permit for a skip on my driveway?
No. Permits only apply to skips on the public highway, which means the road, pavement or verge. On your own driveway, garden or private land there is nothing to arrange and nothing extra to pay.
How long does a skip permit take?
Cheshire West and Chester takes around five working days to issue, Flintshire wants at least two working days' notice, and Wirral is same-day for registered companies. If your skip needs to sit on the road, tell us your date early and we will have the permit in place for delivery.
What happens if a skip is put on the road without a permit?
The council can remove the skip and charge for it, and Wirral adds a £65 penalty on top of the permit fee. Skips on the road also legally need night-time lights and the operator's name and phone number on the side. It is never worth chancing, which is why we handle the whole thing.
